Why do we get pain when we have our periods?

Mother nature can be a right b*tch sometimes.

Menstruation is something dreaded by most women every 28 days and, let’s be honest, it’s a rollercoaster. One minute you’re feeling like a confidence queen, the next you want to eat the entirety of tesco. And lest we forget, the cramps that make you feel like your body is being ripped in half from the outside out. The question we have is: Why do we get period pains?

If you’ve been blessed with a uterus, you will know that periods are your body’s way of getting ready to make babies. The menstrual cycle begins on the first day of your period. Period pains tend to be at their most severe during the first 24-72 hours of your period, so be warned.

After your period, the womb’s lining starts to thicken again by releasing more oestrogen and progesterone. Then if an egg is fertilised, the embryo can grow into a baby. Around day 14 of your cycle, your body will prepare to release an egg from the ovaries into the womb to be fertilised. Then in the final week of your menstruation cycle, if the egg hasn’t been fertilised by a sperm, the womb will contract and shed its lining. That’s how you get menstrual cramps.

These aches and pains are caused by the uterus contracting, pushing the menstrual blood out of the body (charming). When the muscles around the womb contract it restricts blood and oxygen to the surrounding areas. Without an oxygen supply, the body triggers an automatic response thereby releasing hormones called prostaglandins, which cause your womb to contract even more.

Don’t be afraid, period pains are completely normal. However, when they become debilitating, then it is always worth seeing a doctor. Conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis and pelvic inflammatory disease can cause severe period pains and may need some sort of treatment or surgery.

There are many ways of dealing with period pain, however, they aren’t for everyone. Pain killers can contain all sorts of chemical nasties which really don’t sound healthy. Heat relief is one alternative many women use but not only are they awkward to carry around but can even damage the tissues it comes into contact with.

Traditional methods of period pain relief just aren’t for all women and that’s something we just don’t get. The BeYou CBD range is 100% natural and only contains the finest ingredients and are quality tested to make sure there are no nasties or toxic chemicals.
